St. John's Wort and Hypericin (the active compound within St. John's Wort) have been the subject of many clinical trials and a great deal of research.

Test tube studies suggest that Hypericin may help to maintain normal levels of the brain neurotransmitters serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. Low levels of these neurotransmitters have been linked to a variety of psychological disorders including depression, anxiety and stress related disorders, as well as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
